Epilogue

Capria slammed into the chair with a grunt. The bag over her head was tight, nearly choking her. Someone grabbed her arms and removed the cuffs. Next came the bag, ripped off her head.

She blinked, trying to focus her bleary eyes. She sat before a metal table. A pool of painfully white light enveloped her and masked the room beyond in a pitch darkness, hiding everything but what lay immediately around her. She felt acutely naked and vulnerable. Alone. She rubbed her wrists, eying the darkness warily. She had no idea where she was. After being taken by the navy, they’d secured her in the brig. Three days out and men had come in and thrust a bag over her head, then dragged her into a small boat. She remembered the pinch of an injection, then only darkness.

“Miss Eisen. So glad you could join us.”

Capria stiffened, her eyes widening as an all too familiar man walked out of the shadows. His boots clicked on the cool cement, his military jacket thrown back over his shoulders like a cape, a simple suit beneath. His face was sharp and defined, one eye hidden behind a black patch, and on his shoulder, a parrot bobbed.

“Squawk! Twenty gets you anal! Twenty gets you anal. Squawk!”

“Sterling,” she breathed. Her eyes flashed about the room. “Where are we? What’s happening?”

Sterling’s arm lashed out. She flinched, expecting a blow, but the sharp motion merely landed his hand on the chair opposite hers and pulled it back. He took a seat, every movement defined with a rigid, almost machine sharp movement. She distrusted them. They were too quick, too sure, for her to predict where they would land. What he would do.

He clasped his hands before him, his one eye taking her in. “Miss Eisen. It appears there was an issue with the delivery of your device and the sample we requested.”

Capria swallowed thickly. “There… Things on the island. They became complicated.”

“I am aware.”

Of course you are, she thought, a twinge of anger curdling in her luscious breast.

“You appear to have failed us, Miss Eisen. A matter of some consternation among the rest of my associates. We do not take failure well.”

Capria grit her teeth. She could plead that it hadn’t been her fault, but she was never one to play for pity. “So, what? Are you going to kill me? If you are, then just get it over with. Stop toying with me.”

Sterling cocked a sharp eyebrow. “Miss Eisen. I have no intention of killing you.”

Capria blinked, even more wary. You knew where you stood with a man who wanted to kill you. “You… you aren’t.”

“No. I believe you could still be a most useful asset for our organization.”

“You do?” she said, feeling stupid for repeating him.

“Yes.” He snapped his finger, the sound like a gunshot in the quiet. A man seemed to manifest out of the darkness, placing a pair of glasses on the table and a bottle of wine. The man uncorked the bottle, the pop oddly muted after the sharp retort of Sterling’s snapping fingers.
